Abby’s Guitar Journey – Part 13!
19 Nov 2017
It’s all starting to make sense!
Welcome back guys, and thanks for checking in again to see what I’ve been getting up to in my lessons.
You’ve probably wondered where I’ve been for the last 2 weeks as I didn’t have a blog last weekend for you. With things so busy helping plan for the birthday celebrations the guys gave me a week off from lessons as there was too much to do. But not to worry I kept on practicing to make sure I was ready for my next lesson with Paul.
This week we picked up where we left off in trying to understand very contemporary approach to learning all the major chords on the guitar. I’ve learned specific chords previously to get into the habit of finding chords and fretting properly but this approach is more theory based so I can really unlock the ability to move freely on the fretboard.
To find all the major chords Paul focussed on using the A shape, D shape and E shape. Ive used these shapes with all the tutors to play the specific chords but the aim of todays lesson was to use the theory of the musical alphabet Paul introduced me to in the last lesson to move these exact shapes using interval spacing to get all the chords.
This really started to make sense now, things were falling in to place and it felt great to get the feeling that not only could I find and play what was needed, but I also understood how these things were happening. What was it like when this happened for you guys?
For my home work Paul decided to get me to be creative with my new skills. When practicing with all of the chords I need to find chords that I like and put them together in a sequence to see what I can come up with. I’m sure this creative element is the main part of understanding how to do all of this with an instrument to have complete freedom so it will be interesting to see what Paul’s opinion is on what I think sounds good next to each other.
Jamm’s birthday party
This month the studio turned 5 years old and held a big party last night to celebrate with lots of our students and friends performing. I unfortunately couldn’t make it to the party but have heard that everyone did really well so well done guys! Photos will be up on Facebook very soon I’m told so hit the button below to join us there for all the updates!
Thanks for reading and I’ll see you all next week.
Abby was awesome this week and grasped the concept I was explaining to her, despite having to hear it in slightly different ways from tutor to tutor. That’s a hard task so it’s a real achievement at this point in her journey to be able to keep pushing forward each week. The task I’ve set this week should be interesting as it will help Abby to go over her chords and to use her ears to see what sounds she likes next to each other, I can’t wait to see what she comes up with!
